Nitrogen Deficiency 101

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth. It helps with photosynthesis, producing and transporting amino acids throughout the plant, and general plant health. Nitrogen is needed to make chlorophyll – which plants use to convert light into food for themselves. Without Nitrogen, plants simply would not grow.

Statistically speaking, 90% of Nitrogen Deficiencies occur in the vegetative phase. That's why it is important to make sure you are feeding your plants correctly. A Nitrogen-rich food is essential for this phase of the plant's growth – make sure you check the NPK of your food or buy a food designed for the Vegetative phase of the plant.

There are a few telltale signs of a Nitrogen Deficiency. The most common are:
- Leaves start to turn pale green/yellow
- Slowing down of the growth rate
- Yellowing veins of the leaf
- Redding of the seam
- Leaves being to brow and droop

A Nitrogen Deficiency will take effect from the bottom up – because it is a mobile nutrient. If you see the bottom leaves exhibiting any of the above signs, you have a Nitrogen Deficiency.

Luckily, if you do find yourself with a Nitrogen Deficiency, it can usually be remedied in a short amount of time. The best way to do this is to start using a Nitrogen booster – such as Nutrifield Veg Ignitor or Emerald Harvest Emerald Goddess.  These can be given to your plant in small increments, and that will help to fix the deficiency.
