Pumice is a naturally occurring volcanic mineral that functions as one of the most versatile and effective soil amendments available. Its highly porous structure gives it an unusual combination of properties: it holds water and nutrients within its microscopic surface pores while simultaneously improving drainage and aeration in the surrounding substrate. Unlike organic amendments that break down and compact over time, pumice retains its structure indefinitely, providing long-term improvement to soil texture without becoming soggy or dense.

In heavy clay soils, pumice opens up the structure to allow better air and water penetration to the root zone. In light or sandy soils, it improves water retention and reduces the frequency of watering required. The nutrient-holding capacity of the pores also helps buffer fertiliser applications, regulating availability between feedings and reducing the risk of runoff or lockout. Pumice can even be pre-loaded with nutrients before being added to a growing medium, acting as a slow-release reservoir within the substrate. These benefits are achievable with as little as a 10% addition to an existing soil or growing mix.

The coarse 4 to 10mm granule size also provides a physical barrier against fungus gnats when used as a top dressing, disrupting the moist surface conditions that fungus gnat larvae require to develop. Pumice is pH neutral, non-toxic, and does not host fungi, nematodes, or insects. Sterilised and suitable for use in hydroponic, coco, soil, and container growing applications. Particularly well suited to cacti, succulents, bromeliads, and propagation of cuttings.
