Magnesium is one of the more commonly deficient secondary nutrients in hydroponic and coco cultivation. It sits at the centre of the chlorophyll molecule, making it structurally essential for photosynthesis, and it also plays key roles in enzyme activation, cell wall integrity, and phosphorus transport within the plant. Certain cultivars have higher magnesium requirements due to their genetic growth patterns, and heavy-feeding crops running high EC programs are particularly prone to deficiency as other cation elements compete for uptake.

The early sign of magnesium deficiency is interveinal chlorosis: the leaf tissue between the veins turns yellow while the veins themselves stay green. Leaves affected early will drop prematurely and show reduced photosynthetic capacity. Addressing a deficiency once it's visible is slower than preventing it, so supplementation is most effective when used proactively throughout the grow.

House & Garden MgO 8% Magnesium is a concentrated magnesium oxide supplement suitable for use from the start of the vegetative cycle through to the end of flowering. Add after the base nutrient and adjust pH and EC accordingly.
